Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University conducted input distribution-cum-awareness camp on backyard poultry at Village Mehal Kalan under ICAR sponsored Farmer FIRST project.
This entrepreneurial approach was arranged under the guidance of Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education-cum-Nodal Officer of Farmer FIRST Project and Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator (PI) of the Project. The camp was coordinated by Dr. Amandeep Singh, CoPI and Dr. Gurpreet Kour Tulla. In the camp one month old backyard poultry chicks were distributed among 45 farmers.
The beneficiary farmers were provided the basic information regarding backyard poultry farming with special emphasis on the care and management of the chicks along with feeding, housing, lighting, ventilation and heat stress management in order to reduce the mortality. The farmers were enlightened about the different entrepreneurial opportunities regarding backyard poultry farming, which involve minimum input and maximum nutritional gain and financial security. The farmers were also sensitized about the farm expansion, market linkages and value addition of eggs and meat to further enhance their income leading to socio-economic upliftment.
