Know about the College
College of Dairy Science and Technology, Ludhiana is a constituent college of the Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and situated in the main campus of the University at Ludhiana. It was established in the year 2008 with an undergraduate programme of four year duration i.e. B. Tech. (Dairy Technology). The total intake capacity in this programme is 51 students/ year. The college is accredited with ICAR, New Delhi and are following the course curriculum as recommended by the 5th Dean’s Committee of ICAR. The major objectives of the college is to produce trained human resource through its under graduate and post graduate programme to meet the technical manpower requirement of dairy and food processing, government, and R&D organizations. All the passed-out students are well placed either in dairy industry, government departments or pursuing higher studies in various foreign universities of repute. There are five departments in the college i.e. Department of Dairy Technology, Department of Dairy Engineering, Department of Dairy Chemistry, Department of Dairy Microbiology and Department of Dairy Economics and Business Management. Besides the undergraduate programme the college is also having Masters programme in all five disciplines and PhD programme in four disciplines. The college is having one of the best laboratory facilities for teaching and practical classes of undergraduate and post graduate students of Dairy Science and Technology. All laboratories are well furnished and equipped with advanced and modern analytical instruments. As per the requirements of course curricula, practical classes are conducted in the designated laboratories of the college in each department.
The college is blessed with young and dynamic faculty with wide exposure and very good infrastructure, especially laboratory facilities and Experimental Dairy Plant. The university also has a special provision for candidates from outside Punjab under ‘Other State Quota’.
Mandate
- To produce quality human resource through its undergraduate degree programmes.
- To develop new technologies in the field of milk processing and dairy product development.
- To conduct training programmes and vocational courses for dairy farmers, entrepreneurs & persons from dairy industry.
- To provide consultancy services to dairy farmers, industry, Govt. & non-Govt. agencies involved in dairy development programme.
- To liaison with various dairy development organization(s).
- To generate data regarding various aspects of dairy sector in the state and providing policy inputs.
Goals
- Advisory service to farmers, organization of Animal Welfare Camps, Animal Welfare Days, trainings for Dairy Farmers, Poultry farmers, Piggery Farmers. Inservice training programmes for field Veterinary staff. Organization of Pashu Palan Melas at Ludhiana campus and outstations participation in Kisan Melas/Awareness camps for knwoledge updation of the farmers,Mass communication with the farmers.

Brief Introduction
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Uppal, Dean Postgraduate Studies took the additional charge of the Dean College of Dairy and Food Science Technology at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana. Dr. Uppal received his B.V.Sc. & A.H. and M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Medicine from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and joined as Assistant Animal Health Specialist in 1991. He obtained his Ph.D. in Veterinary Medicine from Punjab Agricultural University under Sandwitch Programme of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Fellowship. Dr. Uppal has several awards and honours to his credit viz. National Academy of Veterinary Sciences (NAVS) of India, Commonwealth Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Liverpool (UK), DC Blood Gold Medal by Indian Society for Veterinary Medicine and ICAR fellowships at graduate and post-graduation level. He undertook Advanced Clinical Training from Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He has more than 110 international and national research and clinical publications to his credit. He is widely travelled person and attended various national and international conferences/symposia/conferences/ workshops/ trainings/refresher courses and delivered invited lectures. He has guided 12 M.V.Sc. and 2 Ph.D. students. He has been instrumental in brining and handling several research & infrastructural projects as Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator. He has been the leading force behind the Canine Research Centre awarded to the University by the Department of Biotechnology (GOI).

Experimental Dairy Plant
Experimental dairy plant is another excellent feature of the infrastructure created in the college. The main objectives of the experimental dairy plant is to provide best infrastructure for the practical training and hands-on training of B. Tech (Dairy Technology) students and to undertake R&D work by the scientists for scaling up of the laboratory concepts of newly developed technologies to the pilot/ semi-commercial scale. Experimental Dairy Plant is having the milk handling capacity of 5000 LPD into a diverse range of dairy products. Currently, the plant is having following sections and facilities.
