Fisheries Resource Management

The Department of Fisheries Resource Management, established in 2008, also has competent faculty and is well equipped with labs and facilities to take up advanced research in respect to natural aquatic resources, involving aquatic biodiversity, stock assessment, population dynamics, aquatic pollution, quality assessment, exotics and climate change, in special reference to the major river systems of Punjab. Further, the department is also playing an instrumental role in economic utilization/ management of potential water/land resources for aquaculture i.e., Village/community ponds and inland salt affected waterlogged waste lands.

Brief Introduction :

Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Principal Scientist(Fisheries) took additional charge of Head, Department of Fisheries Resource Management in 2015. She has made significant contribution in teaching, research, extension and institutional development. She hasguided 9 M.F.Sc. and 2 Ph.D students and have taught over 20 UG/PG courses duringthe last 22 years. Presently 2 M.F.Sc. Students are working under her guidance.

Under ICAR’s prestigious Niche Area of Excellence Project (2010-2015),she played an instrumental role in aquaculture development in inland saltaffected waste areas of south west districts of the State and was conferredwith 'Best Success Story' award by the Indian Ecological Society. She alsodeveloped low cost carp feeds with non-conventionalfeed resources like duckweeds & Azolla and region specific Azolla culturetechnology. She is now working to develop ‘Climate Smart AquacultureTechnologies’ viz., diversification involving intercropping with high valuespecies, growth promoting & immuno-stimulating herbal supplements and broodstock management for enhanced aquaculture productivity, without any additionalpressure on already depleting multiple use water/land resources. Being an active extension worker, she has conducted 12training programs in fish farming/aquaculture and served Innovative FishFarmers Association, Punjab for 5 years as technical coordinator.

Recently, she earned an R&D project entitled “Establishment of Capacity Building ResourceCentre for Intensive Aquaculture Technologies in Punjab- Recirculatory andBiofloc Aquaculture Systems” with 100% funding of 1.39 crores under PMMSY CenterSector Scheme (CSS) of Department of Fisheries (DoF), Ministry of Fisheries,Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), GOI, to promote intensive aquaculture technologiesin the region. With 12 R&D projects and more than200 publications, including research papers, review articles, teaching/trainingmanuals, books, booklets, pamphlets and extension articles, to her credit Dr.Meera has also been conferred with ‘Honorary Fellowship' of the IndianEcological Society.
