Dairy Engineering

Dairy Engineering department was established as one of the major departments of College of Dairy Science and Technology. The department offers postgraduate programs M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Dairy Engineering; besides offering course related to Dairy Engineering stream at undergraduate (B. Tech. Dairy Technology) level. The department works with a dedicated goal to empower graduates and postgraduates students with various aspects of milk receiving equipments, milk pasteurization plant and products manufacturing equipments such as vacuum evaporator, spray drier, roller drier, Homogenizer, ice cream freezer etc. Students are also given exposure to operation of Boiler, Refrigeration plant and various types of pumps during the course of study. Besides teaching and research laboratories, the department is also involved in upkeep and maintenance of Experimental Dairy Plant of 5,000 litres milk handling capacity per day which is working 365 days a year. As per the requirements of the individual course some of the practical classes and hands-on training of students are also conducted in the Experimental Dairy Plant with various sections viz., liquid milk processing and packaging section, dairy products manufacturing and packaging section, and Engineering section. For commercial exposure the students are made to visit VERKA Ludhiana plant as and when required.

The department grooms students with best teaching methods, high-end research and provides opportunity to interact with academicians of national and international repute, persons from industry and students at national and international level, via routine seminars/webinars in research interest areas. The department has achieved breakthrough in developing a number of process equipment for manufacturing indigenous milk products. The division is exploring more tie-ups with equipment manufacturers and users for their collaboration in development or in adoption of the developed equipment.

Faculty : The department is blessed with very young and dynamic faculty who has secured many competitive research grants from various funding agencies including NABARD , RKVY,  DST, etc.

Faculty of department is trained at national institute like ICAR-NDRI, Karnal and SLIET, Longowal , ICAR-CIPHET and Punjab Agricultural University to improve upon the professional skills.During the brief period scientists of the department have secured competitive research grants from various funding agencies and handled 8 research projects as PI and are also associated in a good number of  other research projects as the co-investigators. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards like Young Scientist and Best Extension worker award and appreciation from university for development of new technologies.
