Dairy Microbiology

Department of Dairy Microbiology at College of Dairy Science and Technology offers postgraduate programs M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Dairy Microbiology; besides actively involved at teaching Dairy Microbiology at undergraduate (B. Tech. Dairy Technology) level. The department works with a dedicated goal to empower graduates and postgraduates with latest knowledge and skills required to meet the growing demand of dairy, food and pharma (biotherapeutic) industry and promote them for pursuing doctoral and post-doctoral programs. The department grooms students with best teaching, high-end research and provides opportunity to interact with academicians and students at national and international level, via routine seminars/webinars in areas of global interest. Department has established scientific collaboration with institutions of international repute and students gets ample opportunity to publish high impact article with international collaboration. Department has published several highly cited articles in journals of repute like Frontiers in Microbiology, Food Bioscience, Journal of Functional Foods, Journal of Applied Microbiology and others. The department also hosts international students and visiting researchers under several funding programs like TET Fund, CV Raman Fellowship etc.  The department hosts state of the art research facilities like molecular biology unit and cell-culture with high-end equipments like PCR, Real Time PCR, Level 2 Biosafety Cabinets, CO2 incubators etc.; besides basic dairy microbiology facilities required to support academic, research, and extension programs in the area of probiotcs, synbiotics, functional foods, antimicrobial resistance, pathogen detection etc.


Faculty at Department of Dairy Microbiology is enthusiastic and internationally acclaimed as visible with high research scores and citations. Faculty won several externally funded research projects from DST, DBT, SERB, MoFPI etc. Several collaborative projects hosted by department includes prestigious IACR-Niche area grant in the area of antimicrobial resistance. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards like Associate Fellowship of National Academy of Dairy Sciences (India), Post-Doctoral GOLD Fellowship, Young Scientist, Best Teacher and Best Researcher Awards.   


Students at Department of Dairy Microbiology bagged several best poster, oral presentation awards at national and international conferences; besides grabbing prestigious fellowship. Currently, department hosts one DST-INSPIRE Fellow and completed one post-doc under National-Post Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF) program of DST. Department offers campus placement to postgraduates and also prepare them for national level competitive exams. Alumni from Department of Dairy Microbiology are holding positions as Assistant Manager (Milk-Fed, Punjab), Assistant Professor (GADVASU, PAU), Post-Doctoral Research Scientists (UAE, Dubai; Slovak Research Academy, Slovakia) and several Multi-Nationals.

  • Designer Food for Management of Type-2 Diabetes: Targeting Gut Hormone Modulatory Potential of Probiotics funded by DST Duration: 2017-2021                     
  • Objective 1: Selection of LAB strains having inherent gut hormones/enzymes modulatory potentials;                                                           
  • Objective 2: Enhancement of viability of the shortlisted strains through encapsulation and assessment of gut hormones/enzymes modulatory potentials;                            
  • Objective 3: Product development and assessment for gut hormones/enzymes modulatory potential under in vitro and in vivo conditions;                                                               
  • Objective 4: Metagenomic profiling of gut microbiota in T2D induced treatment groups (in vivo) and control;                                                 
  • Objective 5: Shelf life study, packaging and economic analysis of the developed product.
