Dairy Technology

Department of Dairy Technology is one of the core departments of College of Dairy Science & Technology and actively involved in teaching and hands-on training programmes of B. Tech. Dairy Technology students. Department is also offering postgraduate programs like M.Tech. and Ph.D. in Dairy Technology. The department works with a dedicated goal to empower graduates and postgraduates with latest knowledge and skills required to meet the growing demand of public & private (dairy, food, FMCG, etc.) sectors and also promote them for pursuing doctoral and post-doctoral programs. The department grooms students with best teaching facilities, high-end research and provides opportunity to interact with academicians and students at national and international level, via routine seminars/webinars in areas of global interest. Department has established scientific collaboration with institutions of international repute. Department has published several highly cited articles in journals of repute like Ultrasonics Sonochemistry, LWT: Food Science &Technology, Journal of Food Science & Technology, and others, Carbohydrate polymer Technologies and Applications and many more. The department has also hosted international visiting professors & researchers to strengthen the scientific collaborations. The department provides the state of the art research facilities pertaining to dairy/ food products development and characterization, nanotechnology, by-products utilization, cheese and fermented dairy products, packaging, etc. which are equipped with microfluidizer, ultrasonicator, texture analyzer, viscometer, spray dryer, membrane processing unit, dual beam spectrophotometer, etc.; besides the basic facilities required to support academic, research, and extension programs in the area of product development, product characterization, functional foods, powder & protein technology, etc.

Faculty at Department of Dairy Technology is enthusiastic and internationally acclaimed as visible with high research scores and citations. Faculty won several externally funded research projects from DST, SERB, MoFPI, ICAR, etc. They have been conferred with many prestigious awards like Young Scientist Award, Best Teacher, Best Researcher Awards, etc.

College is well-equipped with facility of Experimental Dairy Plant (EDP). It has milk handling capacity of 5000 LDP and diverse range of dairy products are prepared on daily routine basis. Besides pasteurized milk, number of dairy products viz. paneer, dahi, mozzarella cheese, ice-cream etc. is manufactured in the EDP, wherein students are involved during their class practical’s and specified internship programme stipulated for a period of six months.

Students at Department of Dairy Technology bagged several best poster, oral presentation awards at national and international conferences; besides clutching prestigious fellowships. Department offers campus placement to postgraduates and also prepare them for national level competitive exams. Although the college is one of the youngest amongst all Dairy science colleges in the country but its Alumni are well placed and holding positions as Deputy Manager (Milk-Fed, Punjab), Deputy Director (PDDB), Assistant Professor (GADVASU), and in food and dairy industries in India and abroad. Many of them have also captured brilliant positions for their Master’s and Doctoral programme in renowned universities like Massey University, New Zealand; University of Idaho and Washington State University, USA; University of British Columbia, Canada and many more and are glorifying the institute with their research outputs.

The department of dairy technology has best research laboratories (09) equipped with high end sophisticated analytical/ processing instruments to meet out the requirements for teaching and to conduct the practical classes, research & development in the area of value addition of milk and milk products, new products/ functional foods development and characterization, nanotechnology, dried milk products, by-products utilization, cheese and fermented dairy products, membrane technology, traditional dairy products, etc.

The list of available equipments is as follows i.e.  bench top microfluidizer, food texture analyzer, hunter lab colorimeter, rheometer, Uv-Vis spectrophotometer,  viscometer, IR moisture analyser, water activity meter, laboratory spray driers, membrane processing plants, single screw extruder, ultrasonicator, digital bulk density meter, ika homogenizer(s), vibration table, tear tester, tensile strength tester, bursting strength tester, cob tester, box compression tester, millipore water purifier, water activity meter, refrigerated centrifuge, ovens, water baths, incubators, deep freezers & refrigerators, etc.

The research facilities, expertise and international collaboration established and available at Department of Dairy Technology offer holistic development to students, research scholars and scientists  in both academics and research. Alumni from Department are serving as Assistant Professor(s), Assistant Manager(s), Post-Doc researchers, and pursuing Ph.D.
