Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology

Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology at College of Veterinary Science, Rampura Phul is established in 2021. The department has the mandate of teaching, research and extension activities in the field of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology. Currently, the department offers various courses of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology to BVSc & AH students and Diploma students. The department has all the facilities for routine research activities including Biosafety Cabinet Type 2, ELISA reader and Spectrophotometer. The department provides the diagnostic facilities for diagnosis of brucellosis to the farmers. The department conducts extension camps regularly for dissemination of knowledge on zoonoses to the farmers. In schools, numerous awareness camps on rabies and its prevention have been conducted.

Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology

  • The protocols for isolation of bacteriophages against Staphylococcus isolates and Klebsiella pneumoniae have been standardized. Bacteriophages are being  characterized further.
  • Various pathogens including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella have been isolated from retail poultry meat and environment of retail outlets. The isolates are being characterized further by molecular techniques.
  • Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology

  • The Department is actively engaged in extension activities. The department has conducted various extension programmes on brucellosis, rabies,  antimicrobial resistance, food safety and zoonoses for dissemination of knowledge among the stake holders. School students have been specifically targeted in relation to Rabies. Further, the department extends the facilities for diagnosis of zoonotic diseases such as brucellosis to the farmers and  veterinary hospitals. The department has published various pamphlets in Punjabi for the awareness on zoonotic diseases among the farmers.
  • Department in collaboration with Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has conducted a training programme on ‘Diagnosis of Poisoning cases and Infectious Diseases in Animals’ for Veterinary Officers, Department of Animal Husbandry, Punjab from 10-12 November, 2022.
  • Department organized three days online lecture series on “Alternatives to Antibiotics for Control of Bacterial Infections” from 9-11 October, 2023. 
  • Department organized one day workshop on Clinical Biosecurity Assessment Protocol in collaboration with Centre for One Health, GADVASU, Ludhiana on 11 September, 2024.

    • The Department has the facilities for isolation of bacterial pathogens, Biosafety cabinet type 2 (A2), ELISA reader for serological diagnosis and enzyme kinetic studies, UV and visible range spectrophotometer for quantitative estimation of chemicals along with other routinely required equipment's such as vortex shaker, magnetic stirrer etc.
