Animal Disease Research Centre

Animal Disease Research Centre (ADRC) was started in year 1970 and Dr. B. S. Gill joined as first head of ADRC. Thereafter the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Veterinary Medicine came into existence in the year 1998 following inclusion of Epidemiology division from Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine from the Department of Veterinary Medicine in addition to ADRC as per VCI Regulations 1994. Following the new guidelines of VCI 2008, the component of Veterinary Epidemiology has been merged with the Department of Veterinary Public Health, now renamed as Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, and the component of Preventive Veterinary Medicine has been merged with the Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Ethics and Jurisrudence, now redesignated as Department of Veterinary Medicine. The Animal Disease Research Centre has again started functioning as an Independent Unit.

Goals

  • To discover the epidemiology of infectious animal diseases and toxicities by acquiring information on ecology and natural history of diseases prevalent in the state
  • To investigate outbreaks of infectious diseases Viz. brucellosis, TB, JD, IBR, HS, FMD, PPR, Sheep pox, swine fever, coli bacillosis, parasitic diseases and toxicities by surveillance and monitoring, and planning and recommending effective control programs.
  • To assess economic impacts of diseases and toxicities and economic analysis of the inputs and benefits of alternative designed control programs.

Thrust Area

  • To provide services to livestock owners for diagnosis of clinical cases and control of animal disease outbreaks.
  • Testing of dairy animals for various infectious diseases.
  • Active surveillance for infectious diseases in Livestock.
