Directorate of Livestock Farms
The Directorate of Livestock Farms has been created in the year 2015. This directorate includes dairy farm, poultry farm, goat farm and pig farm, Semen freezing and Embryo transfer technology lab. The directorate houses 750 dairy animals including crossbred cattle, buffalo (Murrah and Nili Ravi) and Sahiwal cattle. The poultry breeding farm possesses flock strengths of 4000 layers, 6000 broilers, 2000 Japanese quails and 100 Turkey. About 200 goats of different categories and about 60 pigs are housed at DLF. Apart from that 125 acre of fodder area is under cultivation.
The directorate is running various research projects sponsored by the State /Central Governments/ ICAR on the genetic improvement of dairy cattle, buffaloes, layers and broilers. There is a well established “Reproductive Biotechnology Unit” for developing technologies in semen and embryo production techniques, their cryo-preservation, and embryo transfer so as to enhance the rate of genetic improvement of dairy cattle and buffaloes. The directorate is engaged in the teaching of LFP courses in the areas of Farm Management Practices to both Undergraduate and Post-graduate students.
Goals
Thrust Area
- Genetic improvement of different species of animals including buffaloes, dairy cattle, goat, layers, broilers and Japanese quails by development of different technologies and breeding
- Supply of superior germplasm in the form of semen, embryos, bulls/bull calves, parent and commercial broiler, layer and quail chicks and fertile eggs to the farmers and other development agencies.
- To train students in livestock farm practices and animal genetics and breeding to produce competent human resource for undertaking quality teaching and research.
- To develop processing technologies for value addition of livestock products to improves the income of the farmer.
