Livestock Production Management
The Department of Livestock Production Management was established on 01.04.1999 in the College of Veterinary Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Previously it was a section of the erstwhile Department of Animal Science under the College of Agriculture. The department caters to the teaching requirements at undergraduate level to the students of Veterinary, Agriculture and Home Science colleges. The department also carries out postgraduate programs at masters and doctorate levels in livestock production management. The department has well equipped laboratories and farms to carry out the above undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs effectively.
Goals
- To strengthen teaching programmes in livestock production management for UG students in the disciplines of Veterinary, Agriculture and home Science.
- To strengthen postgraduate teaching programme in livestock production management.
- To carry out research programmes on management practices for different species of livestock.
- To guide farmers for efficient management of livestock.
Thrust Area
- Establishment and maintenance of Instructional livestock and poultry farms for teaching, research and training.
- To develop economical and efficient husbandry practices for different species of livestock viz., Cattle, Buffalo, Goat, Sheep, Rabbit, Pig, Poultry and Laboratory animals (Rats and Mice) under different farming systems/conditions.
- Enrichment of Livestock and poultry farms with suitable precision livestock farming technologies as well as welfare improving housing conditions..
- Promotion of backyard poultry farming for small and marginal farmers.
- Farm animal waste management.
- Multiplication and supply of laboratory animals to different research and teaching organizations.
- Income generation through egg and poultry meat production and to meet the requirements for value addition.

Livestock Production Management
The department of Livestock Production Management is functional as one of the core departments in Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU). The department has sufficient instructional livestock viz., pig, rabbit including poultry flock in a well-established farm set-up along farm machinery which help the undergraduate and post graduate students in getting a better understanding of the subject. Research activities of the department contribute towards, production, management, environmental protection and welfare of livestock and poultry.
- Established infrastructure facilities and a flock of 200 goats.
- Developed feeding schedule for goat under stall feeding and evaluated comparative growth between farm vis-à-vis field conditions.
- Evaluated alternate litter materials for broiler chicks using agricultural wastes such as paddy straw.
- AICRP on Pigs: The Department of LPM is working in pig germplasm improvement and distribution of the quality germplasm to the pig farmers in collaboration with department of VOG & DLF.
- To develop low-Cost Housing for Goat, Backyard Poultry and Swine farming to improve livelihood of small and marginal farmers of Punjab in collaboration with Director Livestock Farms, GADVASU, Ludhiana.
- Feasibility assessment of semen preservation of Beetal Buck reared under stall-fed conditions of Punjab.
- Estimation of labour and water requirement during different seasons at an organized goat farm.
- Supplementation of Bhumi amla (Phyllanthus Niruri L.) as an alternative to antibiotics in broiler production.
- Influence of extruded and course feed on growth performance and gastrointestinal tract development in broilers.
- Retrospective study on evaluation of Beetal goats’ Performance under stall-fed conditions.
- Comparative performance and welfare status of Beetal goats at linear-partitioned bilevel vs hexagonal feeders.
- Influence of Pearl Millet based extruded feed on the performance of broiler.
