Livestock Production Management

The department of Livestock Production Management is functional as one of the core departments in Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU). The department has sufficient instructional livestock viz., pig, rabbit including poultry flock in a well-established farm set-up along farm machinery which help the undergraduate and post graduate students in getting a better understanding of the subject. Research activities of the department contribute towards, production, management, environmental protection and welfare of livestock and poultry.

  • Established infrastructure facilities and a flock of 200 goats.
  • Developed feeding schedule for goat under stall feeding and evaluated comparative growth between farm vis-à-vis field conditions.
  • Evaluated alternate litter materials for broiler chicks using agricultural wastes such as paddy straw.

Collaborative research activities:

  • AICRP on Pigs: The Department of LPM is working in pig germplasm improvement and distribution of the quality germplasm to the pig farmers in collaboration with department of VOG & DLF.
  • To develop low-Cost Housing for Goat, Backyard Poultry and Swine farming to improve livelihood of small and marginal farmers of Punjab in collaboration with Director Livestock Farms, GADVASU, Ludhiana.
Research trials successfully completed:
  • Feasibility assessment of semen preservation of Beetal Buck reared under stall-fed conditions of Punjab.
  • Estimation of labour and water requirement during different seasons at an organized goat farm.
  • Supplementation of Bhumi amla (Phyllanthus Niruri L.) as an alternative to antibiotics in broiler production.
  • Influence of extruded and course feed on growth performance and gastrointestinal tract development in broilers.
On-going Research trials:
  • Retrospective study on evaluation of Beetal goats’ Performance under stall-fed conditions.
  • Comparative performance and welfare status of Beetal goats at linear-partitioned bilevel vs hexagonal feeders.
  • Influence of Pearl Millet based extruded feed on the performance of broiler.
